Initiate Geek Mode: ASA Forum 2017

As it’s my last year in Thailand I’m going all-out for The Association of Siamese Architects annual forum. I usually go for a day and attend two or three lectures but this year I’m going to stay overnight and go for both days of international lectures. I really enjoy this conference. There are guest speakers from across the globe and translators for those delivered in a foreign language with little headsets given out. It’s well organised and well attended by students and practicing architects. Last year I was super excited to see that Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from architectural superstar practice SANAA were speaking but was blown away but the work and principles of Lacaton and Vassel.

I’m not that familiar with the architects speaking at this year’s forum. At this point I’m very interested in Chelvadurai Anjalendran as he was a protege of Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa who I particularly admire for his inward-looking cellular plans that blur inside with outside and his rich aesthetic. I also recognise some of the work from Keisuke Maeda such as this house which I love for its clever use of levels creating a low impact two story house.

I know that I will come away inspired with my creativity tank filled up and ready for my return to the UK.

I’m currently preparing my sketchbook and sharpening my pencils (not really I use a mechanical pencil from Muji- naturally) – ready to engage geek mode.
