A porch is part of the building that sits outside of the main body of the house. Once you’ve had a porch you’ll probably always want one. They welcome you home and keep you dry while fumbling for your keys or pulling off your wellies.
Sometimes a porch is added in an ad-hoc manner or as part of window replacement in the form of a glass and plastic box but the best porches are a considerate and integral part of the character of the house.
The example below shows an existing porch and its proposed replacement. The existing porch is a fully glazed space with no welcoming overhang- more of a conservatory in many ways. While providing additional floor area the space is not particularly practical.

The new porch is a true porch with tiled covered entrance, flowing into the hallway and an enclosed space which extends the family room. the reduced amount of glazing allows for the addition of storage, some increased privacy and more wall space.

Porches are great value additions as they set the tone for the whole house while also being practical. Don’t forget lighting and seasonal decoration- what could be more lovely than being bathed in the welcome glow of the home, the scent of well placed plant and a place to pause?
