This small garden had a short and clear brief
- provide screening from overlooking neighbours
- create functional barbecue area that can accommodate hammocks
- minimal budget and ability to be undertaken as DIY project
- large veg patch with compost bin and water butt
- specific dog toilet area
- retain existing acer
The Existing Garden
The existing garden had a rockery areas and was mainly laid to gravel. It was important to minimise land fill and so re-use the materials on-site. During the buid a large number of bricks were found alongside the house that needed to be incorporated into the site.
The proposal
- introduce a bamboo screen along northern fence to screen from neighbours
- build timber pavilion to define dining area and suspend hammocks
- stain fences to unify colour
- lay over one third of the garden to be a dedicated vegetable patch retained by railway sleepers
- re-purpose and retain gravel with rockery stones to form entertaining area
- introduce small lawn to soften appearance
- re-use surplus bricks in step up to veg patch
