This week I ventured out again into the heat for some green relief in the environs of Benjakiti Park (full set of photos here). The Park, as with most public places in the midday heat of Bangkok, was deserted which felt very luxurious. There were lots of ferns and some great palm tree textures and the breeze made it near tolerable.
I wandered on via Khlong Toei Market towards my destination, Bangkok University Gallery I had three misfortunes in total along my way. Firstly the Vietnamese restaurant I’d earmarked for a cheeky Banh Mi was shut. Secondly B.U.G. (the Gallery) was also shut for a weekend seminar and thirdly I ripped my trousers while crouching to get a low level shot of some colourful planted tyres- but I hope you think it was worth it (check out the full set of pictures on renga images).
However I have come to learn on these walks that it’s the bits you are not expecting that are the reason for doing them. This week the real gem was Thanon Thang Rotfai Sai Kao Pak Nam, a street parallel to the large thoroughfare of Rama IV Road that contained many old timber buildings. I saw many sinking backwards, away from the Road at precarious angles, I saw two that were being cooled by roof mounted sprinklers forming a rudimentary air conditioning system. It was old-school Thai, low-rise community life up against anonymous high rise, condo living. A real surprise in this central location.
